The complete transition of Almaty’s CHPP-2 to gas is expected to be finalized by 2026. This was stated by Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev during a reporting meeting with the city's residents, as reported by a correspondent from the Kapital.kz business information center, citing the ministry's press service.
He reminded that to address the city's environmental issues, JSC "AlES" is implementing a project to convert the CHPP to gas.
“On May 26, 2021, a proposal was presented at a meeting concerning the development of the energy sector to implement a project for the construction of a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) with a capacity of up to 557 MW at Almaty CHPP-2, with the ability to regulate frequency and power in the Unified Energy System of Kazakhstan,” the minister stated.
According to him, the implementation of the project will lead to a reduction in harmful emissions from CHPP-2 from 37.3 to 2.7 thousand tons per year.
“The project cost, based on the state expertise results from September 27, 2024, amounts to 388 billion tenge. Currently, geological surveys of the construction site have been completed as part of the engineering and survey work for project design documentation (PDD). The exploratory work of the first phase has been completed: 22 wells have been drilled, and the second phase of exploratory work: 111 out of 111 wells. Work has been carried out to pour piles for the relay shield building,” he explained.
The installation and pouring of piles for the hot water boiler building is ongoing.
It is worth recalling that in the summer of 2022, former Energy Minister Bolat Akchulakov reported that the total cost of converting Almaty CHPP-2 to gas is 324 billion tenge. As reported, at the end of May 2022, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to expedite the transition of CHPP-2 in Almaty to gas.
