Lack of attention, vigilance, and caution during currency transactions can result in the purchase of counterfeit banknotes, which may lead to criminal liability for involvement in illegal currency operations.

Since the beginning of 2024, approximately 2,000 counterfeit banknotes worth over 80 million tenge have been removed from circulation in Kazakhstan. This poses a serious threat to the financial stability of the country.

Eight individuals have been held criminally responsible for the production and distribution of counterfeit banknotes, receiving prison sentences ranging from 5 to 6 years.

To avoid falling victim to fraud in cash currency transactions, it is essential to carefully examine banknotes for paper quality, watermarks, and other features that are difficult to counterfeit. One should not take risks by dealing with unfamiliar individuals, even if they offer attractive exchange rates.

If you come across counterfeit or suspicious banknotes, do not attempt to spend them. It is necessary to report to law enforcement authorities, who will conduct an investigation.
