The future is here: robots will assist seniors in China.

China intends to actively develop humanoid robots, neurointerface technologies, and artificial intelligence to take care of the elderly. These innovations will be part of reforms aimed at transforming the support system for the older generation, according to Tengri Life, referencing the Xinhua News Agency.

These initiatives are included in a comprehensive reform plan approved on December 30, 2024, by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council.

Companion Robots and Smart Homes

Humanoid robots in healthcare and domestic services could become key assistants for the elderly. In addition, China will actively implement smart home systems to help prevent safety risks for older adults and ensure their comfortable living.

Digitalization of Care

One of the goals of the reforms is to create a unified national information platform that will connect the needs of the elderly with service offerings. This will allow for effective solutions to care issues and ensure access to necessary resources.

Demographic Challenge

By the end of 2023, the number of elderly individuals in China aged 65 and older reached 216.76 million, accounting for 15.4% of the total population. Meanwhile, life expectancy has risen to 78.6 years. The response to these challenges will be a care system, including humanoid robots, capable of meeting the needs of an aging society.

Accessible and Convenient Care

The reforms envision the development of inclusive care services for the elderly. The primary focus is on the accessibility and sustainability of solutions—from long-term care to housing modernization. Special attention will be given to installing elevators in older buildings and generally adapting housing for the convenience of older adults.
