What will replace the recently closed Coffeedelia café in Almaty?

"ABR plans to open two restaurants at the site of the former Coffeedelia coffee shop on Kabangbay Batyr in Almaty. The opening is scheduled for spring-summer 2025," the company informed Forbes Kazakhstan.

Coffeedelia is a coffee shop chain in Almaty. The first café under this brand opened nearly 20 years ago on Kabangbay Batyr Street. On October 20, 2024, the café at this location closed. "This is our dearly beloved firstborn from 2005 (we still call it 'Coffeedelia on Kalinina' ( Kalinina is the former name of Kabangbay Batyr. — F )… We are not saying goodbye, but see you later," the post on Coffeedelia's social media page stated.

The location on Kabangbay Batyr is now "under the control" of ABR, the restaurant group led by Askar Baitasov. One of its projects that will appear at the former Coffeedelia site is Bistro Alma. The first restaurant under this name opened in 2024 in one of the MEGA shopping centers in Almaty. The second is planned to open in the new Almaty Museum of Arts Nurlan Smagulov in May 2025. "Bistro Alma is a café inspired by the city of Almaty. On Kabangbay Batyr, the team plans to continue drawing inspiration from the city's history. This time, ABR will imagine: 'What if Dinmukhamed Kunayev, who, as we know, lived around the corner on Tulebaeva Street, went for cappuccino to the nearest café in the mornings, how would it look?'" the company shared.

The second restaurant at this location will be Astra Brasserie in the format of an urban café. A similar restaurant is set to open in the Villa Boutiques & Restaurants complex, with its opening scheduled for November 2024.

"The concept of the projects refers to history but offers a refreshed vision taking into account modern urban culture and established traditions. Special attention will be given to preserving the historical significance of this location during the project development process," the company added.

The ABR chain appeared in Kazakhstan ten years ago. It currently includes 50 restaurants across 18 concepts. The abr+ app ranks 21st in the list of the 50 largest trading internet platforms (2024) according to Forbes Kazakhstan. Its revenue for 2023 is estimated at $41.7 million.
