A chemist revealed the safest methods for making infusions and tinctures.

The primary risk in preparing liqueurs and infusions at home is the quality of the alcohol, as no one can guarantee its safety, reports Sports.kz, referencing Life.ru.
A chemist revealed the safest methods for making infusions and tinctures.

“There is technical hydrolyzed rectified alcohol produced from non-food raw materials, and there is rectified ethyl alcohol derived from food raw materials. The average consumer is unlikely to distinguish between the two, yet the difference is significant,” explained Vasilyev.

The chemist mentioned that one can find “medical food alcohol” for sale, but the issue is that it cannot serve both purposes simultaneously. Medical alcohol is intended for disinfection and sterilization, and purity is not a requirement for this type of alcohol. It is certainly not suitable for making tinctures and infusions, as it may be hazardous.

The expert noted that tinctures and infusions can be prepared using well-made moonshine. However, the safest method is to infuse with vodka. Yet, there are nuances to consider here as well.

“Vodka must also be chosen carefully. The purest vodka is considered to be made from ‘Alpha’ alcohol, which contains virtually no methanol. Additionally, ‘Alpha’ alcohol is produced exclusively from grains; other types may be made by adding other food products, such as potatoes, and so on. ‘Lux’ and ‘Extra’ spirits are also very pure,” the chemist highlighted.

Vasilyev reminded of another danger when preparing homemade infusions and tinctures: it is important to remember that the pits of stone fruits contain a source of cyanide. Therefore, there should not be too many pits in the beverages.
