What everyone aged 40+ should buy
An expert indicated that the top priority should be purchasing a blood pressure monitor, as it can detect serious health conditions at an early stage, which may have life-threatening consequences, particularly leading to heart attacks.
“If there is one thing I would recommend, it is to get a home blood pressure monitoring device (for everyone over 40, younger if you have a strong family history) — and to monitor your blood pressure at home,” said the doctor.
It’s important to note that many individuals have high blood pressure and are unaware of it; it is often referred to as a silent killer.
Undiagnosed or poorly managed blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney diseases, eye problems, and more, so it is crucial to know your blood pressure numbers and keep them within a normal range.
The best time to check is after a person has rested for 20-30 minutes in a calm environment.
“Blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day, so don’t worry if all readings are not the same, but if they consistently rise, consult a doctor,” advises Amir Khan.
Readings that average above 135-140/85-90 should be monitored by a healthcare professional.
How to help yourself
You can help maintain your blood pressure by quitting smoking, managing alcohol consumption, and eating a balanced diet. Also, try to stay active, get enough sleep, and control stress levels.
