The number of toll roads in Kazakhstan will double, as announced by the Ministry of Transport.

"In order to reduce the budget burden and ensure self-sustainability, a phased introduction of the "toll road" status continues in areas where reconstruction and repair works have been completed. Currently, there is a toll road system operating across the country with a length of 3200 km. In 2024, the revenue amounted to 48 billion tenge.

This year, an additional 4,000 kilometers of toll sections will be introduced, generating revenues of 60 billion tenge, and next year, they could reach 100 billion tenge," - reported Marat Karabaev.

According to the minister, the following roads are currently toll roads in Kazakhstan: Astana-Shchuchinsk (211 km), Astana-Temirtau (134 km), Almaty-Konayev (42 km), Almaty-Khorgos (295 km), Astana-Pavlodar (375 km), Konayev-Taldykorgan (186 km), Taraz-Kainar (238 km), Shymkent-Kyzylorda (447 km), Shymkent-Taraz (90 km), Shymkent-Tashkent (84 km), Shchuchinsk-Kokshetau (61 km), Pavlodar-Kalbatau (453 km), Beineu-Akzhigit (85 km), Uralsk-Samara (56 km), Pavlodar-Omsk (198 km), Kokshetau-Petropavlovsk (169 km), Uralsk-Saratov (99 km), Kyzylorda-Aralsk (455 km).

It was previously reported that Kazakhstan is considering the possibility of starting to charge for passage on seven sections of roads. For two of them, drivers of passenger cars will also have to pay.

It is worth noting that drivers of buses and trucks are the only ones required to pay for traveling on second-category roads, while all vehicles, including passenger cars, must pay for first-category roads. We have written about the toll rates for 2025 in Kazakhstan here.

It was also reported earlier that Kazakhstanis will not have to pay for travel on poor-quality toll roads. The Ministry of Transport wants to include such a provision in the relevant documents.

According to "KazAvtoZhol," there are currently 17 toll sections with a total length of 3221 km in Kazakhstan, including: 11 sections of the first technical category with a length of 2161 km, and 6 sections of the second and third technical categories with a length of 1060 km. The toll collection began for the first time in 2013, with the section of the "Astana-Shchuchinsk" highway being the first.
