Apple has released the iOS 18.3 update for iPhone, which includes the new Apple Intelligence feature enabled by default. Previously, iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro/Max users could only activate this feature manually. However, it is now turned on automatically after the update is installed.
Why This Could Be Dangerous
Apple Intelligence is an integrated artificial intelligence system designed to simplify everyday tasks. However, experts caution that activating it can pose risks:
- high memory consumption – the AI system takes up 7 gigabytes of storage on any device, regardless of its model. This could significantly limit the available space on your iPhone;
- error notifications – one of the features of Apple Intelligence is Notification Summaries, which automatically consolidates notifications into brief summaries. This feature has repeatedly made serious errors;
- risk of misinformation and privacy violations – according to Petros Iosifidis, a media policy professor at City University in London, the Notification Summaries technology is currently not accurate enough and may contribute to the spread of false information.
Furthermore, Apple Intelligence collects data from applications and analyzes it for AI personalization. Security experts, such as Chip Hallett, warn that the system may access sensitive information, including your text messages, banking and financial data, photos, and health information.
How to Disable Apple Intelligence
If you have already installed iOS 18.3 and do not want the AI system to remain active, follow these steps:
- open the "Settings" app;
- scroll down and select Apple Intelligence and Siri;
- turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle and confirm your choice by tapping "Turn Off Apple Intelligence."
Apple claims that user data is encrypted and not stored, but the technology uses it to improve AI performance. This raises concerns about potential information leak risks and the system's vulnerability to cyberattacks.
