The Secret to Tomiko Itooki's Longevity
When she was informed that she ranked first in the global list of supercentenarians, she simply replied, "Thank you."
Last year, Mrs. Itooki celebrated her birthday, receiving flowers, a cake, and a card from the mayor.
Tomiko was born in Osaka, played volleyball in high school, and has always been very energetic.
She climbed Mount Ontake, which stands at 10,062 feet, twice.
The Japanese woman got married at 20 and had two daughters and two sons. During World War II, Mrs. Itooki managed her husband’s textile factory office. She lived alone in Nara after her husband's death in 1979.
She is survived by a son and a daughter, along with five grandchildren. Her funeral was held in the company of family and friends.
According to the Gerontology Research Group, the oldest person in the world currently is 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born 16 days after Mrs. Itooki.
