A popular university in Astana has found itself at the center of a major scandal that has shaken social media and sparked a reaction among students, reports Tengri Life.
What Happened
A scandal erupted on social media following the publication of information that allegedly a student at Nazarbayev University (NU) was conducting illegal video recordings in the women's restroom. According to the post's author, the suspect was found to have 30 videos featuring various victims.
"At Nazarbayev University, a student filmed girls in the women's restroom. He was found with 30 videos of different victims. What will happen to him is unknown. The university has not made an official statement. We demand justice for the victims! Stop covering up such incidents for the sake of reputation," wrote a user.
The post sparked a heated discussion on social media. Some users condemned the lack of transparency in the investigation and called for stricter measures against such violations. Others, on the contrary, urged to wait for the official results of the investigation.
"This is a terrible violation, I hope the perpetrator will face legal consequences," "It reminds me of the site 'Who's Hotter.' They somehow buried that case, it was very unpleasant; I remember how we demanded justice and at least some punishment," "Expel him from the university and sue him," "I heard information that he was a sophomore and he was expelled from the university," - commented users.
What the Police Said
We reached out to the press service of the Astana police department for a comment, where they confirmed the fact of illegal video recording and reported that the student faced administrative punishment.
"Police officers identified the student who filmed a girl with a mobile phone in the university restroom. During the monitoring of social media, the fact of illegal video recording in the women's restroom was revealed. It was established that the violation was committed by a second-year student.
During the questioning, it was found that he was peeking into adjacent stalls through the gap between the partitions. By court decision, he has been held administratively responsible. The capital's police remind of the inadmissibility of such actions in educational institutions and urge adherence to moral and legal standards," the agency noted.
University's Response to the Incident
The university's press service also commented on the publication. NU stated that they take the incident seriously and have already taken measures.
"We understand the seriousness of the concerns raised by the recent incident involving video recording in the women's restroom. The university administration treats this situation with the utmost responsibility. An official investigation is currently underway, involving both the university and law enforcement agencies as part of a pre-trial inquiry. According to legal norms, the details of the case cannot be disclosed at this stage.
The university has taken decisive measures to ensure safety on campus. The student involved in the recordings has been expelled from the campus. Additionally, the university has implemented all necessary measures to protect the well-being of students," shared the university's press service.
Previously, a website emerged on the internet, created by someone who offered users a chance to rate the appearance of female students at Nazarbayev University. The poll, which outraged Kaznet users, was accompanied by photos of the girls and the question "Who's hotter?" More details can be found in the article.
Also, in December of last year, it became known that auditors identified numerous violations and problematic issues in the operations of Nazarbayev University (NU). This was reported by the head of the Accounts Chamber (AC), Alikhan Smailov. More details can be found at the link.
