According to the television channel, 186 settlements in the West Kazakhstan region are at risk. Following the flooding last spring, over a hundred kilometers of dams were constructed in the area, and pipes for water drainage are being laid. However, a significant amount of work remains incomplete.
Specialists do not rule out the possibility of a repeat flooding situation this year. The soil freeze depth in various areas ranges from 4 to 60 centimeters, and above-normal precipitation is expected in February. With rapid melting, these two factors will lead to a large volume of meltwater.
While it is impossible to influence the weather, it was essential to carry out engineering works for flood protection. The region has constructed 107 kilometers of dams and deepened channels. Nevertheless, many water bodies remain unclaimed, meaning that no one knows how they will behave in the spring.
As a result of yesterday's meeting, the akims of Uralsk and the Karatobinsky district received reprimands for inadequate flood preparedness, the channel reports. Active measures are expected from the others.
"Starting today, I expect a report from the akims of the districts, a complete analysis – how many water bodies remain unclaimed, and what documents are still being prepared for them. We need to establish deadlines for when these works will be completed," said the akim of ZKO, Nariman Turegaliyev.
